Okay, that's the first bird photo I upload - I know it's not spectacular, but it is really just a test photo, because my new toy arrived today, a Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 IS II USM. And this merl was the only bird to show up in the one hour I've been waiting for something interesting to happen :D Wish I would live out in the countryside instead...

I decided to make a few test shots in the garden to see how well the EF 1.4x III teleconverter works together with the lens in a real-life situation. I have tested the combo before at the Canon Roadshow and was quite impressed because it seemed as if the teleconverter didn't degrade the (visible) sharpness and resolution of the lens at all!

Indeed, this shot looks like it really works well. I stopped the aperture down from f/4 to f/5.6. I would rate the sharpness 90%, but I don't know if the AF is not 100% accurate or if it's due to the TC.

Tomorrow, I'll spend the day shooting wolves (with the camera, of course! ;)) to test the new equipment. Up to now, I have only used the 70-200 to take photos, and in the beginning I used the 28-300. So the 400mm (or 560mm, using the TC) will be a big improvement, and I'm quite excited to see what's possible.

It will definitely take some time to get used to shooting with a prime lens, that's a completely different way of photography. No zooming at all - so either the wolves are far away and you can fit them in the frame, or you have to take portraits :D Either way, I had a lot of fun trying out the 600mm f/4 a few months back, so I think it will be great :-)

Sorry to upload a test photo, but I thought some of the technically interested folks would be interested to see how the 400mm/1.4x combo works out.

Hey, I was wondering if I could use this as a background image on a poster about the Common Blackbird I have to produce at uni?
Thanks :)
